MPEG1 files (.mpg) and Audio?
Authored by: Anonymous on May 21, '04 01:44:09PM

I had to do this last week, and I could get an enormous dv file (8.9GB) to work fine. But when I tried to play out an MPEG1 compressed movie (created with ffmpeg from the dv-quality qt-movie file, which played fine on the computer under quicktime), it would output the video, but not the audio. I tried all the settings (Sound Output on/off, high quality, etc.), but couldn't get the audio to output

Has anybody else noticed this? Is there a simple something I'm not doing, or a workaround, or bit to add to the code needed?

I think this is more an issue of how QuickTime handles MPEG-1 files, rather than SimpleVideoOut itself. I had an old MPEG-1 that played back fine in QuickTime, but I was completely unable to export to a different format and preserve the audio (using QT or Final Cut Pro), so I eventually ended up grabbing it with Audio Hijack.

Run Show Movie Info (command-I) on the file in QuickTime and you might see something like:

Format: MPEG1 Muxed, 320 x 240

MPEG Streamclip may be able to export it with the audio stream but this iBook G3 I'm on now is too slow for testing. Otherwise you can use it to demux the audio/video streams to separate files, then import those into Final Cut Pro and other apps.
