A UK G4 keyboard for Windows via VirtualPC / VNC

I think the problem with opt-characters is with VPC in general. I tried it before applying this new keyboard layout and still couldn't get them.

I'm not sure which Windows variant the above instructions are for, but with my copy of Windows 2000 the sequence was slightly different, as follows:

  • choose 'Settings' - 'Control Panel' from the Start Menu
  • double click 'Regional Options'
  • choose the 'Input Locales' tab
  • select the input language (in this case English (United Kingdom))
  • click on the 'Properties' button
  • select the 'United Kingdom (Apple Macintosh G4)' layout from the 'Keyboard layout/IME' pop-up
  • then click 'OK' until all the windows are closed.

Note that applications will not notice the layout change until they are re-launched.

The main benefit for me is the transposition of the quote and at-symbol keys, the most annoying difference between Mac and Windows keyboard layouts! A great hint.

Jeff

I'm glad some of you have found this useful.

I've uploaded a new version of the map (over the top of the old one). The symbols you usually find on your mac using the alt key can now be accessed using control+alt.

Unfortunately theres no easy way to do this using the alt key as PC keyboards have alt and graphics alt (which virtually no one uses anyway!)

Its installed in the same way as the previous version but with a different name (its appended with version 2).
