How to avoid the new 'Help' URL handler vulnerability
Authored by: mark hunte on May 19, '04 08:15:22PM

Thanks all for the Heads up on this.

If you want a reminder or a warning as to why Textedit has poped up.

Then try using Stickies. instead.

open stickies and save the open window
with your Message. " Warning some F**@ is trying to use the Helper Exploit to screw your Mac." or some such message. And then change your help app to stickies using one of the suggested apps.

When or if you run into one of these help.Urls. Stickies will pop up
and show you the warning

Trying the Stickies idea, I learned that it isn't ideal. I already have many Stickies, and I added one large pink one, "IF STICKIES HAS JUST POPPED UP, AND YOU DON'T KNOW WHY, IT COULD BE ..." etc.

When I tested it by hitting that bronosky test link, only one Sticky note popped up, and it wasn't the warning one. The rest remained hidden beneath my Safari window.

That's why I wanted an Applescript to act like an application, so I could trigger a dialog box that says precisely what I need it to say for this situation. Lankhmart's proposal is too complex for our purposes, though, but Lank, I appreciate it, just the same!

Sorry I should of added ''if you do not already use stickies.''

One problem with texeditor for me, is I have it open all the time,
with blank windows plus others. so Stickies works fine for me.
