I'd really prefer they be called something like playlist groups instead of folders. In iTunes/iPhoto I only want one "folder" (at a time): the Library. :-)

Generally, a folder is a "one object in one location" metaphor while an iTunes/iPhoto playlist/album is a "one object in multiple locations" metaphor. The ability to group/organize/browse single instances of objects in different ways, with traditional folders being just one method, is more powerful and flexible.

The last paragraph of dglow's post in Next-generation OS smackdown, circa '06. expresses that idea quite eloquently.
