Add logic to smart playlists in iTunes 4.5
Big improvement!
Add logic to smart playlists in iTunes 4.5
I agree! This is hardly the elegance I have come to expect from Apple--it is more like the behavior I would expect from an app by another large software company located in the Northwest USA.

But, sadly, it requires creation of (potentially) large numbers of "placeholder" playlists so you can nest logic. Not only does this clutter the iTunes screen but adds all these playlists to your iPod (where clutter is unacceptable). Not true for the iPod: just create a playlist that contains the union of several other playlists, and sync that one to the iPod. I now have a playlist constructed by unioning 5 GB of most often played music, 5 GB of most recently played, and 5 GB of most recently added, all capped at 9GB to fit on a 10 GB iPod. The three 5 GB lists are not synced to the iPod. I agree being able to use both AND and OR operators in a single smart playlist would be better, though. ---

One really nice thing that can now be done (and couldn't be done with just AND and OR functionality) is the creation of a playlist that shows what is NOT in any iPod targeted playlists. So you can find really easily what music is currently not on your iPod - great for updating what is to be added to the iPod. (I now have a manually built 'on iPod' playlist, and an automated 'not on iPod' list)

Doug Adams's web site has several scripts that will create a new playlist of all your tracks lacking album art. Great time savers - check 'em out. |
