I don't get it. They don't play if they are in the playlist and unchecked. So does it really matter?

You have an option to have only checked songs load to the iPod anyway, so I don't see the point of this either. And if I'm not mistaken, iTunes skips past unchecked songs if you are playing songs from your library also.

I have more music in iTunes then will fit on my 10 GB iPod, so this is how I have managed my music from the first day I got my iPod.

You are mistaken. It doesn't, at least not that I know of.
