Control iTunes from any application via the keyboard...

For global hotkeys I much prefer Spark. It's a general-purpose hotkey utility that works very well - it has plugins for different types of hotkeys, and one of the plugins is for iTunes hotkeys. I currently have F8 mapped to play/pause, and I've been considering mapping things to next/previous as well. Spark also lets you set hotkeys for different things, including triggering applications, opening documents, running AppleScripts, and more. It also has a plugin API so you can write our own hotkey plugins.

Oh, and it's free.
