Duplicating songs in iTunes
Authored by: ever on Mar 27, '04 03:02:56PM

I have my iTunes set to copy songs into my library and keep my library organized. Sometimes, however, I want to add a large file to iTunes just to convert it. In that case, it saves me time to option-drag the file into iTunes. Using option-drag prevents iTunes from copying the file into the iTunes library.

For example, I've quickly created a 200MB text-to-speech file using the "say" command in Terminal. Now I have an AIFF file, but my iPod won't play aiff. So I option-drag the file into iTunes. iTunes now "sees" the file, but doesn't waste time by making a copy for the library. Now you can use the Advanced menu to convert the AIFF to an MP3 (which WILL be in the library), and now the file is ready for happy iPod listening.
