Since the subject of stats software has come up here I'll put in a plug for the open source R language. R is based on S/S-plus, is completely free and runs on OS X, but has no GUI in the sense that most of us are used to -> it has an Aqua interface but not a lot of point-n-click options, mostly command line driven.

I've used GUI stats packages for Mac over the years including SPSS, SYSTAT, SAS and now JMP and really liked most of them (especially SPSS). I only bring this up because there are so few good (and affordable) options for doing research statistics on OS X (as I found out shortly after migrating to OS X and then loosing access to the computers at my research institute).

Consider R if you like programming or want to learn some simple concepts. Also consider R for it's strongest feature: producing publication quality graphics. Furthermore, with the money you save using R you could buy all of the wonderful texts written for R, S and S-plus.

--Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with the R project other than being a user! Just thought I should share my good fortune at finding them with the Mac OS X Hints community.

Actually, there is a gui for R. It's call RAqua. It's feature for feature comparable to the R Gui for Windows and actually works better than it in my estimation. Sure, it's not point and click simple, but it simplifies stuff like adding packages so you can get to the business of skewing numbers.... I've got to learn R so I can quit struggling with SPSS. I hate it and have for years....
