Reason to keep Classic
Authored by: Makosuke on Mar 22, '04 05:00:44PM

I expect Apple will keep classic around for a while yet (at least, I hope they will), since it still has uses. Aside from those old apps that are dead but not forgotten, there are a handful of folks with, say, a copy of Photoshop 5 who're too cheap to upgrade it despite the fact that they're running OSX.

Personally, I almost never launch Classic anymore, but I find it quite useful for web browser compatibility testing. Yes, I'm happy with my G5 and latest versions of Mozilla or Safari, but there are still an unfortunate number of Netscape 4 users out there (hovering somewhere around 1% last I checked), and if your site is popular with non-cutting-edge Mac users, there are a surprising number of people with an early PPC machine still using NS4 (why they don't upgrade to IE5, I don't know). So, it's nice to be able to fire up NS 4 and see just how ugly my site looks in it.

I'm no longer going out of my way to make things look particularly *nice*, but basic functionality with a minimum of painfully ugly is a nice bone to throw those poor fools.
