Or e-mail the host and ask them to turn off 'spanning tree'. We have the same problem here on campus all the time. You could also by a cheap router and put it between the Mac and the Outside.

I don't think the ISP is going to turn off Spanning Tree just for a few users.....

You could also try disabling IPv6 in the Network settings. I have had success with that as well.

I wish I knew about the IPv6 suggestion two days ago when I was in Oklahoma City in a hotel with free broadband internet from an ethernet socket in the wall.

Now that I've read it in various places, I'll remember it for next time. Oh well.
