Minor question, does this work on the older (1G-2G) iPods??

Look again at the original hint: "If you'd rather have your (third generation only) iPod display an actual value...".

We owners of older models just have to get along without a lot of the cool things you can do with the newer ones. I will say, though, that I still vastly prefer the controls on my (2nd gen. 10 gig) model to the 3rd generation models I've tried. Controls are way too touchy on the new ones.

Good luck, John-o

Thats to bad, Apple really should support the old models better, give them some of the new features. like this one.

It's true that the buttons are to touchy, i wear my iPod around my neck in some sort of small bag, and i can control my iPod from the out side, with the 3rd gen you touch the buttons to easily and dont know what you were doing.[/off topic]

Why?

What other personal electronics (phones, MP3 Players, calculators, PDA's, etc.) are firmware upgraded after they are manufactured? Apple has done well with the iPod--leagues beyone Rio, Sony, and the others.
