I'm irked
A number of Mac users choose to use a Mac instead of a WinTel box (among possibly other reasons) simply because it is not the dominant or prevaling platform. And now you've turned around and done a WinTel on those that choose not to use the majority or prevalent OS X release. What irony! And as one of those users of OS X 10.2.6, which in my opinion is rock-solid and thus I would rather have stability over features, I'm irked. Why not just change the title of the site to Mac OS X Panther Hints instead? Heck, go another step and add some JavaScript to test for Pather-specific browsers and deny everyone else. Yeah I'm irked, I'll probably spend much less time here and I'll not refer friends and others to it unless absolutely necessary. How sad that the tyranny of the majority silences again the minority - especially in the Mac community.

Sorry you're upset, but I spend major hours on the site every week, and I've always done my best to make it work for everyone. But I have to balance the reality of my limited time each day with the needs of the readers and so yes, the majority wins. That's the way it goes, unless/until this site goes commercial, subscription, etc. and I make enough money to quit my day job, devote my full day to the site, and hire some assistants to help with the workload. But I don't see that happening anytime soon.
I guess I don't understand why you're so upset -- is it the fact that you might actually read something that doesn't work? Assuming you plan on upgrading your system at some point, I would think that having the knowledge of a hint would be a good thing, and not a bad thing... In any event, here's an alternative proposed solution -- if a hint author specifically codes a hint submission as "10.3 only," then I will include that in the title of the hint. I will not update the Panther meta-hint, as that's a manual task and it's very time consuming. In addition, I will not test any hints on anything other than 10.3.x. This is basically what the situation has actually been like for quite a while -- I've been taking the authors' words for it when they say "10.3 only," as my access to Jaguar (either mine, or through friends) has been greatly diminished since December or so. So in essence, things will be just as they are today, but I will not update the meta-hint, and there will still be no guarantees that a '10.3' coded hint is really 10.3. Thoughts? -rob.

And to further clarify, there will still be *tons* of pre-Panther hints here...I'm not saying it's a 100% Panther-only hints site, only that my handling of "Panther only" hints has to change a bit, given the majority usage of the readers, and the amount of time I have available.

Robj. You are to be commended for your grace in handling this comment. This site is much too useful for anyone to be that irate over how you choose to organize things here. You can't satisfy everyone 100%....People submitting hints are free to specify 10.2 or 10.3 verified/proven.... I don't see an issue here. Sounds like he wants you to do his research and testing for him. That's my 2 cents.

There's a saying, "You can please some of the people ALL of the time, but you can't please ALL of the people ALL of the time" -pdxguy just might be one of them. |
