I'm irked

A number of Mac users choose to use a Mac instead of a WinTel box (among possibly other reasons) simply because it is not the dominant or prevaling platform. And now you've turned around and done a WinTel on those that choose not to use the majority or prevalent OS X release. What irony! And as one of those users of OS X 10.2.6, which in my opinion is rock-solid and thus I would rather have stability over features, I'm irked. Why not just change the title of the site to Mac OS X Panther Hints instead? Heck, go another step and add some JavaScript to test for Pather-specific browsers and deny everyone else. Yeah I'm irked, I'll probably spend much less time here and I'll not refer friends and others to it unless absolutely necessary. How sad that the tyranny of the majority silences again the minority - especially in the Mac community.

Nothing will ever be attempted, if all possible objections must first be overcome.

Sorry you're upset, but I spend major hours on the site every week, and I've always done my best to make it work for everyone. But I have to balance the reality of my limited time each day with the needs of the readers and so yes, the majority wins. That's the way it goes, unless/until this site goes commercial, subscription, etc. and I make enough money to quit my day job, devote my full day to the site, and hire some assistants to help with the workload. But I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I guess I don't understand why you're so upset -- is it the fact that you might actually read something that doesn't work? Assuming you plan on upgrading your system at some point, I would think that having the knowledge of a hint would be a good thing, and not a bad thing...

In any event, here's an alternative proposed solution -- if a hint author specifically codes a hint submission as "10.3 only," then I will include that in the title of the hint. I will not update the Panther meta-hint, as that's a manual task and it's very time consuming. In addition, I will not test any hints on anything other than 10.3.x. This is basically what the situation has actually been like for quite a while -- I've been taking the authors' words for it when they say "10.3 only," as my access to Jaguar (either mine, or through friends) has been greatly diminished since December or so. So in essence, things will be just as they are today, but I will not update the meta-hint, and there will still be no guarantees that a '10.3' coded hint is really 10.3.

And to further clarify, there will still be *tons* of pre-Panther hints here...I'm not saying it's a 100% Panther-only hints site, only that my handling of "Panther only" hints has to change a bit, given the majority usage of the readers, and the amount of time I have available.

(P.S. - Panther is at least as rock-solid for me as 10.2.x ever was; no kernel panics across three machines and thousands of hours of usage; very very rare application quits (no more common than in 10.2.x). So new features does not automatically mean less stability.)

Robj. You are to be commended for your grace in handling this comment. This site is much too useful for anyone to be that irate over how you choose to organize things here. You can't satisfy everyone 100%....People submitting hints are free to specify 10.2 or 10.3 verified/proven.... I don't see an issue here. Sounds like he wants you to do his research and testing for him. That's my 2 cents.

mJones, make that 4 cents. He reminds of some of the "Users" at the Apple discussion boards or even here sometimes. "If I stick my face against an oven burner, will it hurt?" or "Tie my shoes for me". Quit complaining and 1) deal with it, especially since it isn't that big of a deal anyway or 2) do it yourself.

Rob, Kudos to you for the way you handled his post.

p.s. Of course, those "users" are only a very select minority. They just happen to stick out like a sore thumb. I wouldn't want to upset anyone who frequents the Apple discussion boards, as I also do.

Please grow up,
This minor change hardly ruins the whole site, If everyone was like you we'd all be using "good enough" operating systems.

<rant mode=annoyed>
This doesn't make a lot of sense, your tone makes it sound like you're saying that you won't even recommend this site to your friends running panther. Talk about doing your friends a disservice, with friends like you, who needs enemies?

If you're really as annoyed as you say, you could go away and start your own website especially for the supposed legions of 10.2 users like yourself, called or something...

I bet you won't, because it's a lot of work. You're failing to recognise the work that RobG is putting in to run this site free of charge for the Mac community, he's putting in his money and his time every day to bring this site to us, it looks like you're complaining because you're too cheap to pony up $129 for a new version of OS X and expect everyone else to wipe your bottom for you because of that.

Maybe you could apply for welfare or something?

Your attitude strikes me as particularly outrageous considering that the site isn't planning to ban jaguar hints or do anything else that's going to limit you in any way whatsoever. If the site irks you, don't visit it.

I for one will be glad to see the back of you.

There's a saying, "You can please some of the people ALL of the time, but you can't please ALL of the people ALL of the time" -pdxguy just might be one of them.
(is there a disclaimer that says...this site is free and will always stay true to past OS X?...I must have missed that one...) < sarcasm

Why not look at this as an opportunity for some individual to start their own website and call it Pre-Panther Hints..or something like that? Then you can spend all your time away from family, friends, hobbies, etc, and work at the subscription model, and BBS forum moderation and finally, coding for 10.2.x.

Personally-I left MacFixit for the reason of a rude and ignorant forum moderator. And that Ted sold his stake to VT (even though Ted Landau still contributes). What once started out as a community that contributed to the success of the site (but no $ reward), has now gone to subscription model. After a curt but assertive argument that many of us had contributed much to its success, our reward was a year subscription and renewal *if* we continue to get our tips posted.
But the forum moderator made a comment that still irks me to this day. (not quoting it as its pending libel)
So I can see leaving here. I can understand how it can upset one.
But I tend to sympathize with Rob- it doesn't make sense from efficiency standpoint. Perhaps pdxguy might want to do the coding and post it for rob?

RANT-I recommend that folks that support Apple, should do so by purchasing new systems and staying up to date with OS. And support websites that go the extra mile (and not rumor sites) to help the community.
