10.3: Close minimized Finder windows directly in the dock
Does anyone know why this kind of thing won't work for other minimized windows? I never minimize Finder windows, but I would like to be able to close... say Safari windows without restoring them to the screen. :-)

Uhm...I can right-click with my mouse on any minimized program in my dock and select Quit...or are you talking about something else?

YEs, there is. This is talking about Closing windows, not quitting programs.

Does anyone know why this kind of thing won't work for other minimized windows? I never minimize Finder windows, but I would like to be able to close... say Safari windows without restoring them to the screen. :-) This feature is currently available in Carbon only. They haven't made it available to Cocoa applications yet (and Safari is a Cocoa app). Not all Carbon applications support it yet, either. (The author of the program has to make sure to do a couple of special things to make sure the Close menu item will appear.) Unfortunately Apple hasn't done a good job of making various features such as this available to both Cocoa and Carbon. Some things only work in Carbon (like this) and others only work with Cocoa. With every major release of Mac OS X they resolve a few of these problems, but they often add new ones (like this). This feature should be very easy to add to Cocoa (almost trivial, actually) so I expect to see it in 10.4. --- |
