This didn't work for me. I have an iMac running the server connected to a local network (not a modem) do i need to do anything differently?

Schvoo, that sounds like the exact set up I have.
Make sure the AirPort card in the Server also has a static IP.

Server Settings:
--------------------

AirPort:
IP: 10.0.1.50
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Router: 10.0.1.50
DNS: My broadband DNS

Built-in Ethernet:
Set to DHCP
DNS: My broadband DNS

DHCP Server:
Start IP: 10.0.1.51
End IP: 10.0.1.52
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Network Interface: en1
Router: 10.0.1.50
DNS: My broadband DNS

DHCP server set to only distribute one IP for security reasons.

NAT:
Share: Built-in Ethernet

Client Settings:
------------------
Set AirPort to DHCP

I am currently on my PowerBook over AirPort from my iMac running Panther Server.
