It's probably not a good idea to use spaces when naming a hard drive....

I have four partitions all with spaces and never had any trouble except for trying to type the path out in Terminal.

I name them:
G4 Work
<space>G4<space>Work
G4 Panther
<space>G4<space>Panther
G4 Apps
<space>G4<space>Apps
G4 Data
<space>G4<space>Data

No problems at all.

To change to a directory with spaces in it in the terminal:

cd 'Macintosh HD'

or

cd Macintosh\ HD

Cheers

My PowerBook shipped with the hard drive named "Macintosh HD"

Note the space.

Since the default name for a mac hdd is "Macintosh HD" I don't think this is the problem.
