Use the Finder's Get Info window to track downloads

In fact MacOS 9 (and 8, and probably System 7 too but I don't remember it well enough to be sure) did better than that: you didn't have to activate the Finder to see the file size change in the Get Info window, as the Finder updated the display regularly in the background. So you just needed to keep your Get Info window visible in the background and to keep an eye on it, no need to switch to the Finder.
I remember I found it cool.
I miss this feature in OS X (though I haven't actually checked to see if it was back in Panther).
