Create multiple alarms per event in iCal

Multiple alarms.. what are they good for when the current version of iCal is the most unreliable PIM out there. Heck I'd be happy just to get a single alarm for events I set. Instead - you have to either keep iCal open or fire it up every once in a while. In other words... you have to do the remembering or else iCal won't. Yeah... yeah.. thats the way a PIM is supposed to work...

Apparently that's the way that mine works too. I've tried alarms in the past and they never seem to go off. I just thought that I needed to leave iCal open all the time and since I don't, I thought it was useless.

So the alarm IS supposed to work if iCal is not open? I always leave my machine on and awake, so I wonder why I've never gotten an alarm to work. Time to trouble shoot I guess.

I seem to recall that iCal used to fire off alarms whether I had started it recently or not -- I could be wrong, since I used it so often anyway.

Lately, I've been wondering what'll happen if iCal tries to play an alarm, especially one that requires playing a sound recording of my own, while I'm capturing video. I wish there was a global way to tell OSX not to interrupt me, temporarily, whether it's iCal, Software Update, or any other program -- just some way to prevent scheduled events or popups of any kind *while certain apps are running*. In my case, that'd be while Final Cut is running, or iMovie, or Compressor or APack [both of these last two have crashed or failed to compress files unless I closed down other apps -- that made the probs go away].
