10.3: Create a system install DVD

can this be done using a external firewire drive instead of a dvd? the problem i came across is the installer forces a reboot. is there a way around it? firewire is much faster.

10.3: Create a system install DVD

I just managed to install Panther using disk images of the official installation disks. As other people have found, I couldn't create a CD that I could start up from using the disk images I had, and the installer wouldn't run from my external firewire drive. However, I found that some of the .mpg packages inside system/installation/packages would work with the Jaguar installer program. So here's what worked for me, you can only do it if you have two drives to play with:

1) Put Mac OS X Install Disc 1.dmg on your internal hard drive.
2) Log in as root.
3) Mount Mac OS X Install Disc 1.dmg and double click System/Installation/Packages/EssentialSystemSoftware.mpkg
4) The Jaguar version of Installer should now run and let you install a basic Panther startup system on your external drive.
5) Restart using Panther from the external drive.
6) Enable the root account and log in as root.
7) Copy all three installation disk images to the exteral drive.
8) Mount the images of all three installation disks.
9) Now you should be able to double click Mac OS X Install Disc 1/System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg which is basically the full installer and will install everything you want to onto your internal drive.

There you go. You may not have CDs but at least you'll have Panther. The logging in as root thing is very important; if the installer is run by anyone apart from root then the resulting startup disk will have some of the permissions set up wrong and won't work.

Thanks Ditdotdat. You don't know how useful this comment was.

Some useful additional information:

This works on a single drive that is formatted with two paritions.

I used it to update Jaguar and upon restart was asked for disk 2, which I luckily had a cd copy of.

This also helped me install panther despite my broken cd drive in an ibook 600 Because one cannot start up from a usb cd drive.

Another interesting thing is that once panther was installed my previously useless built in cd rom drive kind of works now. I think Jaguar was getting a bit bloated and having a hard time using it for some reason.
