Android - An addictive platform game
Uh. I speak frequently with a software developer friend, and he ensures me that macupdate.com is nothing more than a poorly-run rip-off of versiontracker.com. When he posted an update to one of his products saying that he updated the plist file so that versiontracker could more easily find the version number, macupdate.com sent him an email that read, basically, "oh, so *that's* how they do it!" (As if you'd expect to find the version number anywhere ELSE in an OS X application!)
MacUpdate
As a software developer who uses MacUpdate among other sites, I can say I have had good luck with them. And really, who can complain about a service that lets you advertise for free?
[OT] MU vs. VT
Both services have their strengths and weaknesses.

BlakeyRat - I think you're being a little harsh. When you submit programs to these sites, you submit it with the version number. Normally, they have no reason to go hunting for the version number stored in the plist file. I think that MacUpdate just never had a reason to go looking for it.

Speaking of developers who don't know how to code for OS X, the person who makes this game obviously doesn't either. I'm a strong advocate of simplicity, and this developer seems to be stuck in OS 9, with all the software components OUTSIDE the application bundle. Fun game, but I wouldn't buy it unless it was updated to be more OS X friendly.

Chill out, please. A person is not proven an idiot because they don't know something. Everyone knew nothing once and the rest is learnt, usually from other humans, always from experience. So MacUpdate just learnt something. So what? That'll just make them better won't it? Why is that a reason to withold support? What will are you afraid will happen if we do support them? And what support are you talking about anyway? Most people use it for free without becoming a member. Anyway, like I said, chill and have a better day tomorrow.

On the flip-side, VT has contained HTML code that is so crappy and non-standard that it doesn't render properly ion non-IE browsers (and AFAIK, has never returned one valid HTML page) and pointing this out produces responses (if the email isn't totally ignored) along the lines of "So what. It won't be fixed". Also, the site has become quite clunky if you're not a paid registered user, and AFAIK, there's still not a MacOS equivalent to the free PeeCee application that tracks the applications you have installed. |
