A workaround for the bug
Authored by: tomem on Dec 28, '03 12:30:45PM

After a lot of experimenting, I (re)discovered at least one method that gets around the bug with group emails. Groupings of contacts that are dragged and dropped to an email address field are filtered for those that contain valid email addresses. Don't ask me why this is not the case when groups are referenced using the group name! So, I was finally able to email my entire address book (a bit over 1200 contacts) as follows:

In the Address Book, choose any group or the entire "All" group. The names appear in the Name column. The list can be further filtered using the search field. Select the entire Name column by clicking on a visible entry and using the Edit menu or Cmd-A to select all. Drag the list of desired contacts from the Name column to any address field (probably the bcc: is most appropriate for a large list) of an email open for composition. As you begin to drag, the cursor will change (after a delay) to an icon showing the number of (valid) email addressees that have been selected. When the message is sent, the list of addresses will be checked for validity and any mal-formed addresses will be reported in an error message, so the list can be repaired and retried.

It's a bit slow with 1200 addresses, but works...
