Actually, Mac OS X does not allow you to activate and deactivate fonts like Suitcase does. If you want to have your fonts available to your applications, you must place them in one of the Mac OS X Fonts folders. If they are not in there, they are not available to your apps. The Mac OS X Font Panel is only available to Cocoa applications and only lets you create font collections (similar to sets) but does not allow you to activate or deactivate fonts.

Also, any fonts located in one of your OS X font folders are not available to Classic applications. When you activate fonts from the OS X version of Suitcase, those fonts are available to all of your applications, including Classic apps.
