Use Internet Sharing to enable wireless PC net access
Authored by: rodentx on Dec 10, '03 08:30:01AM

I'm using a 17" G4 Powerbook running OS X 10.3.1 (Panther) -- My Wireless Internet Card is the Sierra Wireless 555 and my wireless internet service is thru Verizon. My PowerBook is also equipped with an AirPort card (obviously).

I've followed the steps from the prior posts (to the letter), but for some reason or another, I can not get my WindowsXP laptop (also with an 802.11b wireless card) to connect to the internet.

Once I've connected to the Internet with my Sierra Wireless connection and turned Internet Sharing on (active/started), I can see the UP ARROW over top of the Airport Signal strength icon In the menu bar...I'm assuming all is well here??

I've found that on WindowsXP, there are only 4 Key index (advanced)' values on the PC to choose from, so I've set both the Mac and the Windows machine to use ' 1 ' as the Key index number to stay within the 1-4 index ID's.

I've set the WEP key to 40-bit and keyed in the WEP key not forgetting to add the ' $ ' before the key (on the MAC). Note: I created the WEP Key with the WEP Key Maker mentioned in prior posts). I've setup the WindowsXP machine as follows:

1. Network Connections folder > Wireless Network Connection > Properties > Wireless Networks Tab

2. Select the Network that you created with your Mac (Which I do see on the Windows machine) > Configure of Properties > Check the 'Data encryption (WEP enabled)' box and the 'Network Authentication (Shared mode)' box.

3. Enter the Hex network key without the ' $ '

4. Set the 'Key index (advanced)' value to ' 1 '

5. Made sure that the Enable IEEE 802.x authentication for this network' is not checked under the Authentication Tab.

I restarted the Windows machine and tried to connect to the internet thru the MAC, but my Windows machine will not connect to the MAC at all. If I disable WEP on the MAC, the Windows machine will recognize the MAC on the wireless network, but not connect to the internet.

I'm at a loss and can't afford to loose much more hair - any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Side Note: If I reverse the procedures and have the Mac connect to the Internet thru the Windows machine (installing the Sierra Wireless card into the Windows machine), it works just fine without WEP turned on, but if WEP is on, I have not been able to connect...yet. I think I may not have ' shared mode ' set on the Windows machine. I will be trying this later this afternoon.
