I have the same problem ... changes to hosts file won't work until I restart machine

I have had this problem since Panther ... I did a clean install; no upgrade. If anyone comes up with a specific solution to this, thank you in advance.

Solution: changes to hosts file won't work until I restart machine

Verify that lookupd is set to use flat files (/etc/hosts) for hostname lookup. Run the command "lookupd -configuration". Look for the lines like this:

LookupOrder: Cache FF DNS NI DS
_config_name: Host Configuration

That means to check the cache, then the file. The problem is the cache.

Run the command "lookupd -flushcache".

That should do it.
