I worked for a company that built newsletters for its clients. They were subscription-only, and saved a ton of money over printing up thousands of paper newsletters and mailing them every month. Plus it didn't waste a lot of paper.

HTML mail has it's uses, and though I agree that I don't much like receiving it unsolicited, and I especially don't like folks hiding spyware-like crap in it, I can see uses for wanting to create HTML emails.

You should always have a 'receive as plain text option'.
