BBEdit is useful for viewing hidden files

BBEdit also can be useful for this (and for me at least, it's handy because I always have it running).

You can use File--Open Hidden to see all files. It gives you read access to any file and, if you make changes, rather than an error message, BBEdit is smart enough to ask you for the admin password.

You can also use the bbedit plugin to get Terminal to tell BBEdit to open any file. Choose BBEdit--Preferences--Tools--"Install bbedit Tool"

In Terminal the syntax is just

% bbedit filename
