10.3: Disabling certain fonts via Font Book can cause problems

Odd. I have not only disabled Helvetica Neue, but outright removed it completely from my system and I have no problems anywhere.

Panther 10.3.1, used to be the same with 10.3.

I did have a problem that disabling fonts in Font Book didn't actually disable the font in all of my applications (it did in TextEdit, Safari and other 'modern' apps), which is why I ended up deleting them.

Font book has caused all kinds of problems for me as well. Does anyone have a canonical list of "Required" system fonts? I've come up with my own default list, but am sure that many fonts I've left in as System Fonts aren't really required...

I deleted several fonts, not realizing some may have been System fonts. I noticed that Keynote's samples (1.1.1) didn't load correctly (it told me there was a missing font) so I reinstalled from a friend's copy. I'm still convinced that iCal's icon has been messed up by font issues as well, since the number now encroaches on the red banner at the top.
