10.3: Use Preview to crop full-quality segments from PDFs
Authored by: MtnBiker on Nov 11, '03 07:04:02PM

Any workarounds for locked documents? Some government employee locked a public document and I can't copy it. To use the paragraph I wanted I had to use a screen capture. Doc is here http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/843/files/policies.pdf

10.3: Or try GKON

The indispensable GraphicConverter from Lemkesoft is able to open PDFs as well and can be used to crop parts of documents. This feature is available in Versions 4.5 or higher. HTH, Gokubi

doesn't GraphicConvert render the PDF to a bitmap though?

It seems so. But by doing it this way, GKON doesn't care for the rights of a PDF. Sometimes this might be the only chance to get something out of a PDF.
Aren't most PDFs made in a higher solution (300 or 600dpi) than the average monitor (72 or 96dpi)? This should allow to crop in fairly usable quality.

The obvious workaround for a locked document is
to unlock it. There are dozens of tools to do that:
google for "pdf decrypt" and the suchlike. I don't
know if there's a GUI tool for this, so it helps not
to be afraid of the command line. (But it's useful
to conquer that fear in any event.) Also I think
there might be legal issues if you're in the US,
but I'm no lawyer.
