10.3: A fix for a non-functional X11 installation
Authored by: mr. k on Nov 07, '03 06:30:33PM
Can anyone help me with this one? I've been having the same above problem but with a different cause. Here's what I got out of console.app -
XFree86 Version 4.2.1 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 3 September 2002
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your hardware is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
	reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)
Operating System: Darwin OSVendor
_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running

Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running
   OsVendorFatalError
   AbortDDX
Quitting XDarwin...

It appears that for some reason an improper shutdown occured with X11. Thus leaving behind a socketpipe file in the /tmp/.X11-unix/ directory. Remove that file in that directory and try launching X11 again.

The problem that I'm having is that ever since I:

fink remove kde3

X11 starts but doesn't stay open. From you good people's posts, I removed the .xinitrc. But now I'm receiving another message from the console.

XFree86 Version 4.3.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
[DRI] screen 0 installation complete
Screen 0 added: 1024x768 @ (0,0)
Quitting XDarwin...

Does this give anyone a clue about what's happening?

I removed the .X11-Unix from /tmp as the above entry said to do. But now its back and I receive this error in the console:

XFree86 Version 4.3.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
[DRI] screen 0 installation complete
Screen 0 added: 1024x768 @ (0,0)
Quitting XDarwin...

It just seems to come back with the same problem. Before I:

chown root .X11-unix

but it still didn't stay started.

I had a very similiar problem - I used OSXPM to delete a previous version of gimp, which caused X11 (under panther) to quit after my new gimp 2.0.0 launched. So I tried reinstalling X11 - no dice. So I googled around, and found the original posting for this thread (.xinitrc as a folder). I didn't have the same problem, but I trashed the .xinitrc file that was in my home directory to see what would happen. Violla! X11 was back in business. Thanks guys!
