Rob... thanks for posting my hint. (Wonder why it posted as anonymous?). I also might mention that unfortunately it will not maintain hot links if the text is dragged-and-dropped. It must be copied and pasted into TextEdit.

This phenomenon also works in Word X for OS X, to my mixture of delight and confusion during a session of cutting and pasting from a link-ridden web page to a Word document.

I just selected, dragged html content from safari to an open text edit window and the links were active.
