10.3: Create iTunes AppleScripts shortcuts

On the topic of hot-keys/shortcuts, has anyone found a way to execute a command that is not located in any application menu? I noticed that if I create a hot-key in the sys prefs pane for an applescript located in my ~/Library/Scripts folder and enable the "Script Menu", my script is listed with the shortcut key assignment.

Now one might think... "Great, now I can create global hot-keys for AppleScripts!", but the hot-key doesn't seem to work. If there is some way to get this to work, it would give AppleScript users a great and powerful way to replicate and extend the functionality provided by programs like iKey without the additional application overhead.

Upon further experimentation, this seems to work for any menu item in global system menu. I created a hot-key for "Away". Sure enough after quitting and restarting iChat, the menu item "Away" in the global menu now displays the shortcut/hot-key. So close... but it doesn't seem to work.
