A quick comment

My first reaction when I realised it played a sound when no new mail was waiting was 'oh no ... soon everything will make a dumb noise, just like Windows'

But then I realised. Apple have been sensible! The 'no mail' sound only seems to play when new mail is checked for *manually*. You can do a 'click & listen' using either the toolbar button, or (more handily) using the Dock context menu without the Mail window open.

If this had been on a less elegant system, the annoying noise would've been played even during scheduled background mail checks.
