10.3: Exposé and Quartz Extreme on ATI Radeon cards
Though I was able to successfully install PCI extreme and get Quartz Extreme acceleration on my Mac (Sawtooth G4 upgraded with a dual 500 Sonnet upgrade card), I did notice an immediate side effect. I have the dock set to auto hide. Without Quartz Extreme running, it appeared smoothly when I rolled over the side of the screen (I have the dock positioned on the left). With Quartz Extreme enabled, the dock emerges in choppy manner.

FWIW, Jim, the Dock choppiness is the *only* bad behavior I've ever seen under Panther, and under Jaguar, the only other issue was Quicktime Previews could become garbled when moved to a PCI-based QE screen. Not really a big deal. Others complained of DVD display issues, but I never had any. I really think you're missing out by not using QE on PCI screens (I use 6-8 screens, myself), unless you rarely use QE-based effects.

I just tried it on my Blue and White G3 450 / 512MB with a Raedeon 7500 PCI, man what a difference... It really makes the UI very useable, I was considering getting a G4 off Ebay or something, Panther runs a lot better than previous versions but was bummed to learn natively it didn't turn on Quartz if you have a PCI card. Thanks to this utility, that is not the case anymore!

i have a g3 b&w their u haven't any problems execept of the choppy dock. imo this is bc the g3 b&w have a 66mhz/32bit pci bus for the grpchic card with seperated controler, so u have a bus twice a fast as a normal 33mhz/32bit pci bus, althout a 2xagp slot ist again twice as fast. |
