I also had to play with this a bit. I'm using a 12" Powerbook, and the keyboard is a bit different from the desktop keyboards. What seems to work for me is either

shift-option-escape

or

fn-F5.

The second one makes good sense: the F5 key by itself is really "volume-up"... pressing the function (fn) key makes it do the actual F5 thing, and I get spelling completions, woohoo.

Not sure why I need to do shift-option-escape instead of just option-escape. I don't see anything in the keyboard shortcuts section of the Keyboard preference pane.
