Robb, if you look at the list of keyboard layouts, there is one called Character Palette and one called Keyboard Viewer. The keyboard viewer had to be checked for me to see the Key Caps keyboard, but if you also click the Character Palette, you get a little window with characters you can click on, with an Insert button you can click on to put special characters into a text string. It's not exactly what you want, but it helps.

If you open textedit with keyboard viewer active. Click on the keys in the Keyboard viewer causes the characters to type into the textedit window. I think this does what robg was looking to do.

and you can use the bigger text command in textedit to make the displayed characters wonderfully large for these old eyes
