It is possible to schedule a startup time in the energy saver panel in Panther (10.3). Check it out.
Indeed, this has made a comeback with Panther.

Anyone know what Unix-y goodness is set to enable these actions to again take place? What cron tasks, etc. are updated to initiate the sleep/shutdown/startup actions?
