10.3: Fully utilize the new threading features in Mail.app
Since Apple claims that Mail can track a thread even if the subject line changes, I'd assume that Mail is using something different than the subject line to differentiate between new and continuing threads.
No, it's actually using SMTP headers
Regarding:
how does threading work? does mail.app only thread emails containing "re:"?Not at all - since it's agreed that any cross-language responses, or other manipulation of the subject line, would break such a simplistic "grouping" algorithm (note also the usual desire to included "Fwd:" messages, etc. in this same grouping). The new Mail.app is actually using the "Message-Id", "In-Reply-To", and "References" headers in the email messages, to attempt to relate them. These are added by most SMTP mailers, as a way of indicating exactly what you're looking for: These messages are related to each other by their original message ID. I don't know what specific problems you're seeing, but I've had very good luck with several emails with COMPLETELY-different subject lines, being (correctly) threaded together. Seems to be very reliable from this end, although apparently YMMV...

I think this is how the old Netscape threading used to work. The only problem with this method is that often I will just find an old email from someone and reply to it instead of copying and pasting email address. The threader would then think that this unrelated email is part of the original thread (or the user on the other end would think so too). I guess the new menu things in Panther's mail.app obviate my lazy method of sending an email, though.

I do that, too. Just be sure to delete the "In-reply-to" header in your response message if you really aren't creatiing a continuation of the thread. |
