Install OS X updates on hard drives with limited space

Be (generally) careful when a HFS+ volume has less than 10% free space: the Volume becomes much susceptible to directory damage, that for the rest of us translates to a good chance of a disk crash. There was a very informative thread in a MacFixit forum few months ago, but I do not manage to find it now.

yep - running OS X on a machine with less than 1gb of free space is generally a bad idea. There's a strong risk of having the swap file overwrite data in such instances.

This is one of the better reasons for having swap space on a separate, dedicated partition. I agree, however, that it is generally a good idea to leave generous headroom on the system disk or partition.
