As user lolopb here found out, you can disable Rendezvous by opening the application Directory Access in /Applications/Utilities.

Unselect 'Rendezvous' from the list of services listed and click the 'Apply' button to make the changes.

If everything in the window is grayed out and inaccessible, you may need to authenticate first. Click the lock at the lower left corner of the window and enter your user password, if you have administrator privileges.

I should correct my earlier reply... I did take both of your advice and disable Rendezvous in Directory Access, but the mDNSResponder process remains running (before, it slipped past me).

I don't know if this process is synonymous with Rendezvous being active, but this doesn't seem to have the exact same effect as the original hint. Disabling in Directory Access leaves it running, but using the StartupItem script to stop the service does kill the process...
