What am I doing wrong???
Authored by: fuzz_ball on Oct 19, '01 11:42:24AM
I saw this blurb last night so I decided to try it out. I grabbed my nearest CD-ROM (a game I own) and I used it as my test. Well, I created a .dmg file (and this may be where my problem is) using disk copy.

First off, the file was 663 MB. I didn't notice this and I attempted to burn to a CDR. 2 coasters later, I noticed the size problem. I then changed the options in Disk Copy to limit the size to 630 MB (it was either that or 1 GB, there was no option in-between). I then created a new .dmg file. It then created 2 .dmg files! The first one was 630 MB the other was much smaller. So I think I do not understand the .dmg creation process correctly. Can anyone provide any tips???

On another note, when I place a blank CDR in my drive, I always get a window asking me to "prepare" the CDR. If I say "No" then Disk Copy doesn't "see" the CDR; if I say "Yes" then it takes up 8 MB "preparing" the CDR. Is this supposed to happen?

Copying CDs...

Hi,

I even use Disk Copy to dulpicate CDs including HYBRID CDs. Just select "Create Image From Device" from the menu and you'll get to image any CD.

Hello fuz_bal !

Well, as for your size problem: If the source (the original CD) is larger than 630 MB , but if you limit the size of _one_ Disk Image to 630MB, then Disk Copy will naturely create a second Image in order to "represent" all of the source (the original CD). You see Disk Copy tries to _copy_ your CD. If you don't allow it to do so in one, it'll make it in two. Reducing the maximum size does not imply higher compression :-(
As for "On another note, when I place a blank CDR in my drive, I always get a window asking me to "prepare" the CDR. If I say "No" then Disk Copy doesn't "see" the CDR; if I say "Yes" then it takes up 8 MB "preparing" the CDR. Is this supposed to happen?"
Yes, that's supposed to happen. The "preparing" is essential. The 8MB shouldn't harm you since they're discarded after the burn is finished.
