I wouldn't go as far as considering the iPod as a "standard hard drive"; the partition map of the iPod is by all means unusual for a firewire drive, as it contains two invisible partitions that hold boot arguments and firmware software: that's why if you reformat the unit you loose your digital music player, transforming it in a regular firewire hard drive.
