Panther Hint Request
Authored by: martinx on Sep 26, '03 04:49:50PM

How about a kind of reverse hint question list? For example, I've got questions I'd like answered before I put any money down to upgrade to Panther:

1. Panther is supposedly going to be competing with Longhorn. What does it have in the way of database filesystem features? (I'm guessing it has no database features cuz I've not heard a peep from anyone about it. Why is it being compared to Longhorn then?)

2. Does Panther support accessing CD-RW in packet mode? Last I checked, Roxio STILL didn't support this in their burner tools. What's up with that?

I'm hoping there are really more technical features added then the mostly UI stuff on Apple's web site. I realize Apple is mostly about the GUI, but you'd think since they were getting innovate with OS X they wouldn't just stop at that...

Panther vs Longhorn

Please remember that Longhorn won't be out for another year - the earliest the rumor mill puts it is August 2005. the only reason anyone claims Panther and Longhorn are "competing" is because M$ is spreading FUD about how great Longhorn will be when it ships - "Why by a mac now, when you can wait 18 months and get Longhorn!"

I think this whole "competition" thing started a while back when someone stated that Apple's aggressive upgrade schedule of a new major release each year was letting them steal a march on M$. Her point was that by the time Longhorn was ready to ship, Apple would have already released Panther plus whatever follows Panther.
