Play 3GPP files from video/camera phones

Unfortunately this is not quite as straightforward as it sounds as 3gp files come in many flavours. Maybe Quicktime will play stuff authored on the phone itself however....

I downloaded the Nokia 3gp multimedia authoring kit (on a PC, Mac version not available) and the resultant files will not play through Quicktime due to an "invalid sample description". There's no rocket science to this, you put an AVI in one and and a 3gp (WB-AMR) file plops out the other.

Cross platform video is still a black art and as we can expect standards wars from Apple, Real, Microsoft and now mobile standards, it looks like we the user have to pay the price.

Still, at least the wonderful and open source mplayer and VideoLan Client can take out some of the complexity (though they can't deal with 3gpp stuff yet).
