DVD playback?

Anyone have any luck with DVDs in this OSX version of Mplayer? The site doesn't seem to give any information on them, and the official Mplayer docs give a command-line solution that's no use with the OSX app. VLC offers a 'play disc' menu option that works fine. You can drag .vob files into Mplayer, but they don't seem to play (though I'm no DVD file expert). Has anyone got DVDs playing through this version of Mplayer?

On a related topic, did anyone find a way of stopping DVD PLayer from running when a disc is inserted? I can stop it playing, but it still runs and puts a region change message up where applicable (and closing it ejects the disc). Ideally, I'd like to make VLC/Mplayer the default DVD application and bypass Apple's DVD Player altogether...

Can't you just change the setting in the 'CDs & DVDs' control panel (assuming you are using 10.2)? This should allow you to change the default DVD player from Apple's to whatever you like...

You, my friend, are a genius, and I am a fool.

This is like losing your glasses and having someone point out they're on your head...
