Use an external browser with AOL

What about the SMTP server that your email provider uses? Is that the "extra" cost that was mentioned?

If the email provider didn't have an SMTP server - how would you send email even without using AOL?

Does AOL block outgoing SMTP? If so one solution could be to use an SSH tunnel to somewhere, and route your SMTP through that. That came in handy when I was working at various worksites - and didn't want clients to filter/block/sniff my company email - or even my personal email. There are commercial options too, like Anonymizer - but they cost $$$.
