So can I use this to attach my ipod to multiple machines?
Isn't it generally a bad idea to do something like this? I had thought that there were certain files/configs that were set up for the specific hardware you were running, and so CCC'ing the exact setup of the cube over to a Powerbook could have other subtle, unforeseen problems like this.

I've had no trouble for over three months now, other than the iPod issue. I had a minor problem immediately following the CCCing (the desktop was messed up a bit, and it didn't know it had a battery) but that was fixed by installing the 10.2.6 Combo Update again. Both systems have been rock-solid since.

Nope. An install of OS X is universal, with one caveat: If you're doing a "build" for multiple machines, make sure you create it on the newest hardware you've got-- otherwise, the OS won't "know" about that hardware and include support for it in the install. Apple has always had applause-worthy backwards compatibility. This trick worked with OS 8.x and OS 9.x as well. At my last job, I ran plenty of beige G3s and even some 8600s and 9600s with a build I had created on a graphite G4. Made my job really easy to only have to maintain a single build for all the Macs I supported. ~Philly --- |
