Configure CUPS for use with SMC Barricade Print Server
Authored by: glusk on Aug 11, '03 09:55:36PM

I have an older SMC Barricade that crashed a lot but new firmware seemed to fix it. The problem with printing (an HP laserjet connected to the server) is that Mac OS 9 or X leaves something in the print job that doesn't print, forcing me to go to the printer and reset it after each job. Windows 2K LPR printing doesn't have this problem.

After reading this site and learning a lot about unix from you folks [you guys cause me lots of late nights geeking out BTW :) ], I figured out that if I set up the printer with the CUPS web interface, I don't get the junk at the end of the print job. But I do get a banner, which I can't seem to turn off. This is a waste of two pages after each job and I'd rather reset the printer.

Has anyone else solved this or should I get a real print server?

Configure CUPS for use with SMC Barricade Print Server

I've had an extensive history of struggling with the SMC Barricade and various flavors of OS X. Different versions of OS X seemed to break LPR printing, others fixed it.

My experience is documented in a usenet posting that links to many other postings. One of them might help.

After my SMC died I bought a Hawkings Print Server. With that I acheived nirvana, because I switched from LPR to AppleTalk (pap://*/ATALK_PS-21B423-1/LaserWriter
) for my old LaserWriter Select 360. The above posting describes how I got that to work with OS X; there's really no documentation for the Hawkings PrintServer so the post is worth reviewing.

covers the same ground.

PS. Once my LW 360's cartridge dies I believe I will not be able to find a replacement. It will become landfill, even though it's a robust workhorse that could run for another decade. Does anyone else think there's something wrong with this picture?

LW Select 360 Toner
Authored by: saint.duo on Aug 11, '03 11:53:19PM

I don't know about other Apple authorized resellers, but we can still get Apple branded toner for the LW Select 360 for about US$100. Feel free to email me privately if you're interested, or need help finding a source. I can send you the ingram micro part number if you'd like.
