Installing OS 10.2 on Beige G3
Authored by: rottenapple on Aug 06, '03 06:05:44PM

I'm at a loss with installing OS 10.2 on my beige g3 266. It hangs on the apple logo when I try to boot from the CD.

I installed 10.0 (and updated to 10.1) a long time ago. I had to add a jumper to the hard drive, and I had to remove a USB PCI card, but it worked and everything ran fine.

Now though I wiped everything out to do a clean no-OS9 install of 10.2 (jaguar), and it hangs every time on the apple logo when booting from the CD, sometimes with white lines appearing across the screen.

I tried resetting the PRAM, "reset-all" in open firmware (command-option-O-F), reformatting the 12 gig drive into 7 and 5 gig partitions, everything. There are no other peripherals or cards connected the machine, just the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and ethernet card.

It's something specific to 10.2. The OS 9 CD boots fine.

Any other suggestions? The only thing I can do is install OS 9 for the time being.

What the????
I just reset the PRAM a couple times more for the hell of it, and now the 10.2 CD is booting.

I guess the trick was to have <8 gig partition AND reset the PRAM a couple times after that.

Whatever. Anytime I have a problem in the future I'll post here to have it magically go away. Thanks MacOSXHints!

Installing OS 10.2 on Beige G3

I'm reading this thread months after the fact, after I had the exact same problem: a hang on the 10.2.3 install disk when trying to put it on a beige g3. I finally got things to work by putting an ide card into the g3 and plugging its main drive into it. (I used one of the old Ultratek 66 RAID cards, but I imagine just about anything would do). So I guess that lends at least some credence to the OF script being corrupt.

Just a couple of questions, for those still interested:
a.) does it do this with the 10.2.0 disk? or Just the 10.2.3?
b.) I vaguely remember that the two ide interfaces are different, and perhaps I mixed the two up. Since right now I have the system working, I don't want to go through another install, but I just thought maybe one is a low speed ide that doesn't support modern hard drives.
c.) I'm using a revision A motherboard/rom....has anybody had this problem with a rev. b through d board?

Just some thoughts and a workaround....

Installing OS 10.2 on Beige G3

I have a beige G3/233/384MB RAM. It is upgraded for USB and Firewire. I upgraded the OS from 10.1.5, to 10.2 without any problems.
Then, I decided to erase the disk, and re-install. The installer disk #1 would hang at the apple screen, and there it stayed. After removing the Firewire/USB card, the re-install proceeded without problems. Then I reinstalled the PCI card, and all is well.
