Use the Home button in Safari to open a new tab

You can refine this further: open Main Menu.nib in Interface Builder, click on the 'View' menu item, double click the 'Home' item and type in 'New Tab'. Then save, relaunch Safari, and the 'View' menu will present you with the option to display the "new" 'New Tab' button.

I use a generic two-button scroll-wheel mouse, and OS X maps the scroll-button to auto-scroll, anchoring the page at the mouse click, and scrolling with mouse movements, which I find annoying. So, I use USB Overdrive to map the middle button to pass a CMD-click to the OS, but I can't map CMD-T to it, so this is a somewhat useful tip in my mind.
