Use Internet Sharing to enable wireless PC net access

For those of you with a different set up IE a base station (in my case the original Graphite one) and not an airport card in a powerbook. Here is what worked for me.

1. Open the Airport Admin Utility Select your base station and click on configure
2. Click Name and Password
3. Under the field where you have entered your unique Wireless network name check the box "Enable Encryption (using WEP)"
4. Click on change password
5. using the little WEP Keymaker utility generate a key and copy it (the HEX key) to the clipboard
6. enter a $ in the new password field and paste the rest of your key. Repeat for the verify box and click OK

If you click on SHOW SUMMARY it will show you your Wireless Hex Equivalent password.

ON THE PC

I have an Orinoco (Lucent) 802.11b card in a Win2K laptop and with this particular card you get to the password a bit differently than in the hint (hey it's a PC!). If you're just installing the software for the first time it it will present you with a series of dialog boxes:

1. Enter the network type (Access Point)
2. Network name
3. Enable Data Security (WEP)
select the option to use Hexadecimal and enter the password you just created (WITHOUT the $) in one of the key boxes.

if you have done everything right you are connected and surfing the web.

Remember it is a good idea to use a unique and non-obvious network name and password. 802.11 security is not bulletproof but it will keep most casual users out of your network.
